If you love the platform, this is one of the books that needs to be on the shelf with volumes 1, 3 and, 4. Patrick Sweeney does his research and tries parcel out a little more in each tome. I love his writing topically as well as the way he writes. Never overbearing or a passive brag as seen in many gun manuals. These were written as the AR platform was gaining popularity and so it feels like he is parceling out the information as it occurred. Admittedly these should probably be rewritten and condensed into one book but, that wouldn't be as profitable for the publisher, would it? There are sections that are now dated. Be it on particular manufacturers or on products that just don't seem as relevant today as they did then. Additionally, the influx of new calibers and suppression need to be addressed in a depth that just isn't covered in the four volumes to my satisfaction.They are awesome when taken in historical perspective remembering when they were written. Without a doubt, if you are an enthusiast, you will learn from each and every volume!!
Being clear, this is a great book, written by an authority on the subject. You can rely on every smidgen of information. However, it is written for the novice, and is not the continuation of the first volume with new content added. If you want to know about your new rifle, get this book. If you want more detailed information,but volume one. To be fair to the author,he said this in the description, but I just had to have it. Mr Sweeney give excellent advice; follow it and enjoy.
I purchased both volumes 1 and 2. Volume 2 is almost a complete repeat of Volume 1 with little to no additional information. There are vast sections of this book that are word for word out of Volume 1. There are other better books with more details on building, gunsmithing and maintenance of AR's.
Fantastic guide. Essential for anyone running an AR. I had plenty of experience with the AR platform from years in the military and still found this guide great. It helps you clearly understand how the platform operates and how to properly maintain it for use rather than military inspection.
Good info, interesting reading. New owner to one of these carbines with mechanical background. With this and with Sweeney's Gunsmithing... Bench Manual book lets owners know what can be done to improve their's or consider assembling parts to build one.
I'm a new AR15 (Colt LE6920) owner and I found Volume 2 to be very informative. It's an easy read with good illustrations to enhance the reader's understanding and appreciation of the AR's components. I will rely on it as a ready reference when questions and/or difficulties arise.
No revelations.
This is the best book I have come across for working on the AR-15. The author explains everything in simple easy to understand terms along with pictures. A little humor is mixed in as well.
