She shields herself from the Arab dictates of women's behavior by becoming a tomboy with short hair, a mannish swagger and a boy's nickname; she is devoted to a boy of similar mixed identity named Amine with whom she navigates the violence of newly independent Algeria during the 1970s. The underlying menaces of disenfranchisement and racism torment their childhoods, until the two friends are separated. About the Author
Nina Bouraoui was born in Rennes, France, to an Algerian father and a French mother. Shortly thereafter, she moved with her family to Algiers, where she lived until the age of thirteen. Bouraoui received the literary prize Prix du Livre Inter in 1991 and the Prix Renaudot in 2005. Marjorie Attignol Salvodon is an assistant professor of French at Suffolk University. About the Author

Floyd E. Toole studied electrical engineering at the University of New Brunswick and at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London where he received a Ph.D. In 1965 he joined the National Research Council of Canada where he reached the position of Senior Research Officer in the Acoustics and Signal Processing Group. In 1991 he joined Harman International Industries Inc. as Corporate Vice President – Acoustical Engineering. In this position he worked with all Harman International companies and directed the Harman Research and Development Group, a central resource for technology development and subjective measurements, retiring in 2007. He is currently a consultant to Harman. Dr. Toole’s research has focused on the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction in small rooms, directed to improving engineering measurements, objectives for loudspeaker design and evaluation, and techniques for reducing variability at the loudspeaker / room / listener interface. For papers on these subjects he has received two AES Publications Awards and, for service to the society, the Board of Governors Award. For his achievements he has been recognized with both the AES Silver Medal (1996) and Gold Medal (2013) Awards. He is a Fellow and Past President of the AES, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a Fellow of CEDIA (Custom Design and Installarion Association). He has been awarded Lifetime Achievement awards by CEDIA and ALMA (Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics International). He has recently written a book: "Sound Reproduction: the acoustics and psychoacoustics of loudspeakers and rooms." (Focal Press, 2008).

You need to be realistic if you purchase this book. The author is a superb scientist and recognized authority in the field of acoustic engineering. If you have a strong background in the "hard sciences" i.e. math, physics, chemistry then you'll get a lot out of this book. I have advanced degrees in biological sciences and frankly much of this book was too complex for me. It should also be said, at least IMO, that the book could be edited very substantially as quite a bit of material is repeated and again IMO quite a bit is unnecessary. If you are determined you will glean very helpful tips about speaker placement and a greater understanding of low frequency behavior in rooms, but it will be painful and time consuming. The folks at Audioholics reference Dr. Toole often and they manage to distill his teachings into much more practical and easy to digest bits on their YouTube channel.

In short, I keep re-reading this book - probably the last collection by Floyd Toole. I wish most speaker manufacturers would heed his advice and give the consumer the data they need to make meaningful decisions. As an engineer (retired) but from another discipline, I gather a lot of useful information in this book. Sean Olive or other protege should come up with an enhanced version in the future. Discuss, please, the types of automatic room equalization systems available, and which ones work well and which don't. I've done a lot of manual equalization after the first steps of speaker placement and some room treatment. Various devices enable rapid measurements now. A means to bring all this data together and provide a downloadable EQ curve to a parametric equalizer is something I would like to see (as opposed to some proprietary algorithm where one just presses a button.) The consumer digital camera world has become very technical, precise and accurate in terms of product technical reviews of capability and performance. Even in 2016, and at the most extreme prices, "HiFi" continues to be defined by "snake oil" salesmen. And the Audio Critic is dead. Is anyone listing to Toole other than JBL?

I am not going to write long about that book. Simply put: it just changed my attitude completely. Many things in this book seems contradictory to the common knowledge. That pushed me to investigate more on the topic (especially in terms of loudspeakers), that as a consequence led me to Mr. Linkwitz web page...Then I realized that I was spending huge amount of money to be able to listened to some nice music...and all that was not necessary. Suddenly I got to know that proper loudspeakers could sound fantastic in my empty, modern equipped living room. I then got one, tested them and found most of the concepts in the book to be accurate and true. Now, my specially designed "listening room" (with "golden dimensions", acoustic treatment etc.) stays empty...and my wife used to call it "guest room" as we all listen to the music in our living room now.

My son in college is studying engineering and is very interested in learning more about this subject. He says it is exactly what he was looking for!

Very good for home theater and stereo playback in small room acoustics such as consumer rooms. Covers small room acoustics much better than the normal acoustics books.

I used to count myself among these ranks, but ultimately lost interest and patience with more than one dealer, and ultimately the industry itself. Why? Too much snake oil and "need for component, cable, interconnect matching and the egregious amounts of money needed to do so" whose collective impact IMHO is maybe a couple of percent of the total--assuming the equipment is competently designed and matched. I bought this and two other books recently as I have become more interested the DIY aspects of the hobby, including designing and building loudspeakers.There is a lot to recommend this book--not the least that Dr. Toole takes to task at least a segment of the industry which includes tin eared and/or unprincipled reviewers and some of the makers of loudspeakers who cannot seem to be troubled with getting a reasonably flat frequency curve from their products. Some of the other book reviews lament that Dr. Toole doesn't go so far as to name names in some of these instances. Personally I am fine with the fact that he chooses not to. Besides I suspect that there is enough info given to make some well informed guesses.The book is much more, and while I consider myself more of an old school 2 channel kind of guy, read with great interest his thoughts on the future of audio and the need for multichannel reproduction. Also fascinating was the research (some of it decades old) showing that golden eared gray bearded gurus may not be the ones to be offering advice as the effects of age on the hearing might be greater than generally appreciated, and besides, that those with good hearing can generally be counted on to arrive at a consensus of what sounds good even lacking special training, secret handshakes, and the opportunity to listen at length in their own homes.If you're one of the readers who breathlessly waits each month for tales of how some 7000 dollar DAC beat the pants off one costing 1/2 as much--at least most of the time with some types of source material but only after burning in for several weeks--this book may not be for you--even though you may be the one to most profit from a thorough reading. If you have a general interest in the hows and whys of music reproduction along with some great history from an industry insider, I think you will find like I did, a very compelling read and a book worth keeping handy.Highly recommended.

Great book to learn about sound reproduction! Tons of useful information.

The use of test signals were never my forte but I did use them for subwoofer intergration and speaker and sub phase response. Dr. Toole is right on about so many setup and bad and good myths and I like the fact that I used many of his techniques instinctively.Music after using Pink and Brown noise was ofcourse the main tool in capturing the best in music as per quality of timbre and proper bass and high frequency reproduction.A great book from a great mind, Highly recomended, John M.

Allman has also worked in Citigroup's Global Securitized Markets division modeling conduit transactions and in MBIA Corporation's Quantitative Analytics group. He is the author of the Wiley titles Modeling Structured Finance Cash Flows with Microsoft Excel and Reverse Engineering Deals on Wall Street with Microsoft Excel. Allman received a master's degree in international affairs with a concentration in finance and banking from Columbia University and dual bachelor degrees from UCLA.

If you are looking for an authentic work on the Old West, the West that really existed, not the West fabricated by Hollywood, this work by J. Evetts Haley is sure to please.Charles Goodnight was a most remarkable man. He emigrated to Texas from Illinois at 9, was hunting with the Caddo Indians at 12, entered the cattle business at 20 and guided the Texas Rangers at 24. His 2,000 mile Goodnight-Loving cattle trail delivered Texas Longhorns through Comanche territory from West Texas to New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming long before the railroads or settlement. He established the JA ranch in the Texas Panhandle in the former Comanche stronghold of Palo Duro Canyon, dominating nearly 20 million acres of range, and would go on to be highly regarded for his breeding techniques. Under his management, the JA ranch would return 72% on invested capital for 10 years. He appears to have been a good, fair man but hell on rustlers.But his most significant contribution to Texas and the Nation was as a conservationist. Alarmed at the slaughter of the buffalo, in 1876 he preserved a herd on his ranch. Descendants of that herd still exist in West Texas as well as numerous zoos throughout the country. Importantly, it was from this herd that bison were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in 1902.This is a fine biography about a man whose life spanned the settlement of Texas. It took Mr. Haley 10 years to compile the detailed history, stories and yarns contained in this book. It was time very well spent. Haley will make you laugh and tug on your emotions but mostly it will amaze you that a no nonsense, iron willed man like Charles Goodnight could come from such a humble, frontier existence to accomplish so much good for his State and Nation.

The book was fine but the man it described was better than the book. The energy and perseverance described by the author is a gift that few men could match. My father used to say that technology made each successive generation weaker than the one that spawned it. Few men today could match Goodnight for courage or tenacity. Mr. Haley wrote about a man he loved and respected and he did so because he understood what my father did.

This is a very interesting book. Usually books with any historical value read like a 10th grade history text book. They just list facts or what the author says are facts and a lot of dates. Very mundane. This book takes in accounts from the men that lived it (including Charles Goodnight himself) and puts it into a narrative that is easy to follow along with. I am not sure why I never had this in my library before now. There are things in this book I have never heard tell about from alligators in the Brazos west of Waco to how the old timers positioned the trail crew to create the proper length and width of a herd of longhorn steers while driving them up the trail. If you are a fan of Lonesome Dove this is a must read tale of the real men that Larry McMurtry based his classic novel on.

An excellent view of what Texas plains were like before law and order and even basic conveniences. It was amazing to me when one day Goodnight said to his ranch hands that perhaps they should stop killing cattle rustlers. Maybe it was time to bring in law.

IMO, this book is very well written and a great read. I would highly recommend it for those of us that are interested in the early days of the cow/ranch industry! Lots of interesting facts and information.

wonderful story about a great cattleman in the early days of the southwest cattle industry which he helped establish. He established the loving-goodnight cattle trail as well which went from Texas to Montana.

this is one of the most boring books i have ever tried to read. not much about Charles Goodnight and a lot of tedious details of life in that era

This is a great book. Most of the book is told as a chronological story that weaves together some great Texas history with the early life of a great Pioneer and Texan. Reading this book I came to the conclusion that Larry McMurtry's Characters and part of his story for Lonesome Dove were "borrowed" from this much earlier work of non-fiction. Personally, I find the truth and the actual history more fascinating than McMurtry's fiction. This is a good read. Great information and much of it given to author first hand while Mr. Goodnight was still living. References are extensive and the legacy Mr. Goodnight left is very well documented, supporting his first hand descriptions. As rough and tough as Charles Goodnight was and had to be to survive, he was a civilized man with a tremendous sense of morals and a sense of duty. That lesson alone makes this a biography worth reading.
