About the Author
Epictetus (c. AD 55–135) was a teacher and Greco-Roman philosopher. Originally a slave from Hierapolis in Anatolia (modern Turkey), he was owned for a time by a prominent freedman at the court of the emperor Nero. After gaining his freedom he moved to Nicopolis on the Adriatic coast of Greece and opened a school of philosophy there. His informal lectures (Discourses) were transcribed and published by his student Arrian, who also composed a digest of Epictetus's teaching known as the Manual (or Enchiridion).Robert Dobbin received a PhD in classics from the University of California, Berkeley, and taught history and classics at the college level. He is the translator and editor of Epictetus's Discourses and Selected Writings for Penguin Classics, as well as an author of articles on Virgil, Plato, and Pythagoras. He works as a book editor in Northern California.

My mentor, Lee Thayer, talked about choosing your parents carefully. While one cannot choose their biological parents, they can choose those who parent/influence their lives. Epictetus is one of those parents. His thoughts and ideas are as relevant today as they were when he shared them 1800 years ago. .Mindfulness was alive and well with Epictetus and the Stoics as with Buddha and his followers.
Amazing amazing amazing. I’m a new practicing Stoic. The tenets set forth in this book are surprisingly relevant to modern life and me, personally. The central goal involves freedom of the mind from externals, producing inner tranquility, awareness, and control. Also, I didn’t know about this before purchasing, but this book contains the full Enchridion in the back.
Just a great book to read. Following Marcus Aurelius and Seneca I had to give Epictetus the due respect and read his work as well. This translation is very easy to read book include few extras of Epictetus writings and wonderful intro and summary of Epictetus life involves around stoicism and ancient Rome.Recommending this book to whomever want to better himself as a human being.
This was part of a core "library" that I've given each of my children as they go off to college. They may not read it this week or this year, but someday it might provide valuable perspective, as it has me.

While the Enchiridion is incredibly potent, with this one we get to see just how witty Epictetus is as he unpacks his ideas during lectures. (Both the Enchiridion and Discourses were transcribed and published by one of his students, Arrian.
